HISTORIES

Leading Corporate Law Firm
Approaching its 60th anniversary and facing a major generational shift, a leading corporate law firm wanted to articulate and reinforce its values. A pioneer in the postwar market for corporate control, the firm had developed a scrappy, upstart identity, able to challenge more established firms through intellectual ability and an unrivaled dedication to client service. How could the firm sustain that culture of entrepreneurship, meritocracy, and diversity now that it was an established, global law firm of 400 partners and more than a 1,500 associates?

As a first step, the firm commissioned Winthrop to conduct a major oral history program. Over two years, we interviewed more than 50 interviews partners and professional staff, active and retired. The rich vein of stories, anecdotes, and insights we unearthed served to articulate the firm's organizational culture in ways that resonated with younger partners and associates. It also helped them to understand how those values, such as client service, collegiality and cooperation, and a tolerance of dissent, had contributed in concrete ways to the success of the firm for over 60 years.
