HISTORIES
Children's Hospital Boston
Children's Hospital Boston, pediatric teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School, is one of the oldest, most distinguished pediatric medical centers in the United States. In 2002, Children's Hospital commissioned the Winthrop Group to conduct a series of oral histories that would support initiatives in marketing, communications, and fundraising. Building on considerable experience in the health care sector, Winthrop historians interviewed more than 60 people at Children's Hospital, from doctors, nurses, and former patients to administrators, social workers, and volunteers. We helped them to articulate turning points and defining moments and to frame their experience in wider historical contexts.
Today, Winthrop's oral histories serve a variety of needs at Children's Hospital. They form a valuable part of public relations and communications efforts, both inside and outside the hospital community. Audio clips and excerpts from the interview transcripts feature on a website celebrating the 50th anniversary of the polio vaccine. Transcripts whose subject material extends across many different practice areas also allow researchers to draw connections they might otherwise have missed. By capturing the stories, perspectives, and experience of the people involved in caring for sick children, Winthrop's oral histories yield new insight into the human dimension of medicine.
